What’s your favorite kind of ride: bike, horse, motorcycle, or car? Whatever your favorite ride is, we can offer some great scenery and fun activities along the way of these day-trips in the Shenandoah Valley.
Spring is on the way and the best place to see some great views and maybe catch a glimpse of spring wildflowers is on a horse carrying you on a backwoods trail ride. There are several nearby stables that offer trail rides for riders over 6 years old. Winston Churchill once said “No hour of life is wasted that is spent in the saddle” and for just $40 per hour you can enjoy the experience of life in the saddle. A beautiful 20-minute drive through the Tye River Gap Recreational Area will lead you Appalachian Horse Adventures. The experienced trail-master can take you on a one to three hour trail ride depending on how much time you have or how experienced you are as a rider. Some rides follow an historic narrow-gage railroad bed while other rides take you high in the Blue Ridge Mountains. You can make your reservation for a ride online. Star B Stables is located less than 30 minutes from our B&B and offers an “escape” to the countryside for you – on horseback. No experience is needed – just the sense of adventure! Rides are by appointment only so call ahead to 540-885-8855 to set-up your ride.
If you want to peddle your way through the Shenandoah Valley, bring your bikes for some great cycling adventures! For a bike ride that leads you along creeks and through small villages, follow The Great Valley Road – aka US Route 11 – just outside our door! Go south from Steeles Tavern Manor B&B and head to Devils Backbone Brewery. Along the way stop by Timber Ridge Flee Market for a little shopping/rest stop. Continue on to Devils Backbone Brewing Company to restore your electrolytes before heading back to the B&B. For a list of more challenging rides (with cue sheets), visit the Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition. You can find rides that take you along mountaintops or along scenic river trails.
If you want mechanical horsepower in your ride, glide through Rockbridge County on your motorcycle! The area near our B&B offers roads with some wicked turns and beautiful vistas! Follow some of the rides mapped out on the Roanoke Valley and Rockbridge Rides Brochure and you can stop to get a view of Crabtree Falls. Or take a ride on the National Park known as the Blue Ridge Parkway. All of these rides will allow you to enjoy spring with the roar of the engine and the wind in your face!
If you prefer the comfort of your own car, there are scenic drives throughout the Shenandoah Valley. The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most famous scenic drives in the country. The drive from the Shenandoah National Park to the James River is a 64-mile stretch that includes stops where short hikes can yield rewarding views, interesting rock formations, and beautiful waterfalls. Plan your drive on this iconic route!
