Hike at Natural Chimneys Park in Virginia
There are many interesting places to hike and explore in the Shenandoah Valley. One of the lesser-known gems of our area is Natural Chimneys Park. Natural Chimneys Park is about 45 minutes north of our Inn, just on the other side of Staunton. As its name suggests, the park’s most striking feature is the natural limestone rock formations, known as the chimneys, formed here by natural forces over millennia.
At Natural Chimneys Park, seven towering limestone formations rise dramatically from seemingly out of nowhere. They resemble ancient castle spires., towering up to 120 feet over you. These natural pillars, formed by the slow erosion of limestone by water and weather, offer a unique starting point for exploration and invite hikers to ponder the natural history that has crafted such an awe-inspiring scene.
The allure of Natural Chimneys Park extends beyond its iconic rock formations. The park offers a variety of hiking trails that weave through lush woodlands, open meadows, and along the banks of the North River. These trails range from easy walks on flat trails to more challenging routes that reward the adventurous with stunning vistas. Each trail presents an opportunity to experience the diverse ecosystems and rich biodiversity that characterize this part of the Shenandoah Valley.
The water levels of the North River tend to be low in the winter, but they offer a welcome opportunity to cool off on a hot summer day. When the water levels return in the fall, there are several fishing spots at Natural Chimneys Park, and the river is regularly stocked with trout.
For something truly unique at Natural Chimneys Park in Virginia, consider timing your visit around one of their two annual jousting competitions. The Natural Chimneys Jousting Tournament takes place in August, while the National Hall of Fame Jousting Tournament is in June. There’s a jousting track at Natural Chimneys Park, and this historic sport has been an integral activity at this park for over 200 years.
