Travel Shenandoah Valley’s Farm Trail – Fields of Gold

Discover Virginia’s home-grown adventure in the Shenandoah Valley with a tour, a taste, and a stopover at one of the participating businesses of the Fields of Gold. Whether you are looking for a pick-your-own strawberry field, a wonderful wine experience, or a full farm-to-table dinner, you will find it here on the Fields of Gold interactive map.

Let’s start our agricultural experience right here at Steeles Tavern Manor B&B and Alpine Hideaway Cottages where you can see that we grow our own herbs that we use in many of our breakfast dishes. Fresh mint is often used as a garnish on our fruit course and is sometimes minced into the locally grown strawberries and melons.  You may hear a gentle “moo” of one of the local cattle grazing on our land. We will continue our exploration by telling the story of where we purchase most of our ingredients for breakfasts and for our social hour.

Most of our guests really enjoy our homemade chocolate chips cookies. The flour that we use in those and all of our baked goods is produced nearby at Wade’s Mill in Raphine, VA. The short drive to the mill makes it easy to tour the historic structure and purchase some of their stone-ground grains to take home.

Some ingredients necessary in our chocolate chips cookies is butter – of course!  We purchase our butter and many cheeses served at afternoon social hour is made locally at Mountain View Farm Products. The 250-acre farm is home to 200 cows that produce all the milk needed for the fresh butter and artisan cheese that are enjoyed by our guests.

Fresh eggs are delivered to us from Red Bud Ridge Farm and much of our bacon (who doesn’t love bacon!) comes from Buffalo Creek Farm located near Lexington, VA.

The very best-tasting fruits are those that fresh off the vine or tree. The very best to find the freshest fruits and veggies is at a road-side farm stand or Farmers’ Market. We regularly shop at Farmer’s Markets in Lexington and Staunton for locally sourced honey, asparagus, garlic, melons, tomatoes, and zucchini.

During our welcome social hour, we serve locally made wines and beers. Our favorite local beers are brewed just down the road at Devils Backbone Brewing Company.  The closest and a local best winery is Rockbridge Vineyard – located a short nine-minute drive from our B&B. Both of these beverage producers are included on the Fields of Gold list along with 30 other wineries or breweries.

The Fields of Gold interactive map includes Farm-to-table dining options in the Shenandoah Valley. Kind Roots Café and Mano Taqueria are two of the Lexington farm-to-table restaurants listed on the Fields of Gold map.  In Staunton, visit Cranberry’s Grocery & Eatery or Nu-Beginning Farm Café & Grocery to enjoy a meal and to purchase some natural foods to take home with you. Zynodoa’s menu changes daily based on locally available.
