You may have your own traditions or activities to enjoy for New Year’s Eve. Here are a few other traditions from around the world that you may want to use to close 2018 and ring-in 2019.

Eat something special: In the southern US states, eating Black-eyed peas are a tradition that is believed to bring prosperity in the new year; In Dutch homes, eating something in the shape of a ring (such as a donut) symbolizes “coming full circle” and leads to good fortune; In India and Pakistan, eating rice promises prosperity; In Spain, people eat 12 green grapes 12 seconds before midnight to bring good luck in the new year.

Make Some Noise: In China, firecrackers were thought to destroy the forces of darkness; In Thailand, guns were fired to scare off demons; In early American colonies, pistol shots rang out through the air; Still today Italian church bells ring, drums are played in Switzerland, and in America, party horns and sirens may be heard to bid farewell to the old year.

Give a Gift on New Year’s Day: In Rome, gifts of coins or gilded nuts marked the start of the new year; Eggs, a symbol of fertility, were exchanged by the Persians; Early Egyptians exchanged earthenware flasks; In Scotland, shortbread, silverware, and coal were traditionally exchanged for good luck.

Raise a Glass: Champagne is the favored beverage around the globe; In Holland, enjoy some hot. Spiced wine; Drink a cup of “Wassail” (the Gaelic word for “good health”) is still a popular drink in parts of the UK.
