2018 marks the 30thanniversary of Virginia Wine Month! That is the longest statewide celebration in the nation. Virginia has proven that we know grapes, wines, and wine-making with lots of awards given to a wide variety of vineyards and varities of wine.
When we decided to search for a B&B property to purchase and begin our journey on the innkeeping road, we wanted to be in “wine country” AND we wanted to be relatively close to our family home near Pittsburgh, PA. We found our dream B&B property in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Virginia is home to over 300 wineries and we have a wonderful collection of award-winning wineries here in the Shenandoah Valley.
We enjoy the fruit of the vine so much that we named our guest rooms based on grape varietals grown in Virginia, including Carbernet Franc, Viognier, Norton, Petite Verdot, and Chardonnay.
Check out the Shenandoah Wine Trail for a start to your tasting tour of Virginia Wineries. The closest (and our favorite) winery is located just a few miles from the inn. Rockbridge Vineyard often has special events scheduled. On October 28th, 2018 enjoy the music of Pete Famham in one of the “Uncorked” music events. You can listen to a mix of bluegrass, vintage country, and folk music while enjoying some great BBQ food from Zizzy D’s Food Truck.
Be sure to take a tour of more wineries and enjoy the fall foliage of the Shenandoah Valley. Indications are that we will hit peak leaf peeping time near the end of October this year. And remember that a midweek getaway has its advantages!
Ray & I have visited many of the wineries in Virginia. In fact we are members of The Wine Century Club. Membership in this club is open only to those people who have tasted over 100 different grape varietals! The motto of the club, “Veni, Vino, Vici”, roughly translates to “we came, there was wine, and we conquered the wine”. To us, it’s been a great experience to travel to so many wineries around the country and taste so many varieties of wine!
