The Best Shenandoah Valley Caverns in Virginia
There’s plenty of resplendent beauty above ground in the Shenandoah Valley. From the storied lands of Shenandoah National Park to the breathtaking drive along the Blue Ridge Parkway, you’ll find one picturesque view after another as you traverse the Valley. Where you might expect to encounter dark, cramped spaces below ground, you’ll experience even more breathtaking beauty underground at various Shenandoah Valley caverns in Virginia. Beauty that is, at least at times, otherworldly.
The underground marvels of these Shenandoah Valley caverns offer visitors dramatic rock formations, placing the marvels of Mother Nature’s raw power on full display. From vast chambers adorned with stalactites and stalagmites to mysterious subterranean lakes and rivers, the caverns in Shenandoah Valley will captivate your imagination – all while offering a welcome respite from the heat of summer. Below, we’ve listed our 5 top Shenandoah Valley caverns in Virginia to visit this summer.
- By far, the most popular cavern in Virginia is Luray Caverns. This underground marvel is about 90 minutes from our cabins, but it’s more than worth the visit. The Luray Caverns are known for their impressive size and intricate underground formations, including towering columns and pools. Paved walkways lead visitors through cathedral-sized rooms with ceilings up to 10 remarkable stories high. Perhaps one of the most unique features of this impressive cavern in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley is the Great Stalacpipe Organ, known as the world’s largest musical instrument.
- Just over an hour from our Inn, near Shenandoah National Park, are the Shenandoah Caverns. With impressive rock formations and vibrant colors, it’s easy to see why this is one of the most popular caverns in Virginia. Guests have been visiting this underground spot since 1922, a spot famous for its famous “Breakfast Bacon” formations and so much more.
- Nearby Shenandoah Caverns is Endless Caverns, which have been open to the public for tours since the late 19th century. The famed 6-mile-long cave sits at the base of the Massanutten Mountain range and, true to its name, features an array of seemingly “endless” tunnels and chambers.
- Grand Caverns is less than an hour from our Shenandoah Valley Bed and Breakfast and is the country’s oldest continually operating show cave. The cave is renowned for its massive flowstone formations and delicate “draperies” that hang from the ceilings.
- One of the furthest away caverns in Virginia is Skyline Caverns. It’s just under two hours away and is worth visiting, thanks to its rare anthodite formations. This is one of the few places in the world where you’ll find these “orchids of the mineral kingdom,” but other things to see here include the Cathedral Hall with its impressive scale and beauty.
