The Commonwealth of Virginia has over 275 wineries that have produced award-winning wines. The state honors the vintners, the grapes, and the wines throughout the month of October. You can celebrate Virginia Wine Month with a stay in a room named for varieties of local grapes and wines at Steeles Tavern Manor Bed & Breakfast.
The Rockbridge Vineyard is located in Raphine, VA – just a nine-minute drive from the B&B. They will be celebrating their 24th Annual Harvest Festival on Saturday, September 30, 2017. What a great way to kick off VA’s Wine Month in October! The music will be provided by Greenhouse, a group that performs a mix of acoustic music. Food will be served from Saucy Swine-O’s. The Pit Master, Rick Ballard, cooks up some wonderful smoked meats including brisket, pork butts, ribs, and chicken. The Harvest Festival begins at noon and continues until 6pm.
One of the favorite wines at Rockbridge Vineyard is their 2013 Rockbridge DeChiel Cabernet Franc. Purchase a bottle of this winner of the Silver Medal-2017 Virginia’s Governor’s Cup. It’s aged for 36 months prior to bottling and has a touch of cedar. The description on the Vineyard’s website suggests pairing it with marinated, gilled meats. We suggest that you pair it with a stay in our Cabernet Franc Room!
In Staunton, VA, you will find Ox-Eye Vineyards – a Virginia Farm Winery. The Ox-Eye Tasting Room will be adorned with the art of Laurie Gundersen during the month of October. Ms. Gundersen’s media includes Botanical Prints and Slow Stitch on Cloth. See this unique artwork and taste some fine Virginia wine. Get a bottle of the Chardonnay 2015 – a dry wine that has flavors of melon, citrus, linden, and vanilla. That wine pairs very well with our Chardonnay Suite!
Virginia was the birthplace of Winemaking in the Colonies. George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both had extensive vineyards designed to produce the finest grapes for winemaking.
