More Scenery on the Virginia Scenic Railway

These scenic drives promise a magical adventure through the Shenandoah Valley this fall – but there are so many more things to do while you’re here. There’s plenty to love about fall in the valley, especially when you choose our cabins as your home away from home. Scenic drives are plenty relaxing, but if you’re looking for something even more leisurely, consider a ride on the Virginia Scenic Railway.

The Virginia Scenic Railway departs from Staunton and is the only regularly scheduled tourist train in Virginia. You’ll hop aboard a vintage 1940s-era rail car, which has been modernized for a comfortable journey, and set off for a scenic adventure through the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. There are a couple of different routes and itineraries to choose from aboard the Virginia Scenic Railway, but all include access to the rolling farmlands, peaceful rivers, historic towns, and beautiful mountains. Like most things in the Shenandoah Valley, a ride on the Virginia Scenic Railway is gorgeous no matter the season – but it’s absolutely stunning in the fall.

In addition to the scenery out your window, you’ll enjoy a narrated tour that provides insights into the region’s history, the significance of the railway, and the various towns and landmarks along the routes. The Alleghany Special travels west from Staunton past rolling farmland and into the beautiful George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. The Blue Ridge Flyer heads east out of Staunton and through the communities of Fishersville and Waynesboro before it ascends around 1,000 feet to the entrance of the mile-long Blue Ridge Tunnel. Both trips include a meal, a dessert selection, and a beverage (coffee, soda, tea, and water). Beer and wine are also available for purchase.
